Deterministic Microgrinding, Lapping, and Polishing of Glass-Ceramics

چکیده

40 LLE Review, Volume 97 Introduction Glass-ceramics are attractive structural materials due to their good mechanical properties, chemical stability at higher temperatures, and tailored microstructures via appropriate heat treatments. In the cold working of glass-ceramics, several options are available: loose-abrasive grinding (lapping, at fixed nominal pressure) or deterministic microgrinding (at fixed nominal infeed, with bound-abrasive tools), both of which primarily remove material by microcracking. These manufacturing operations are usually followed by polishing to remove the residual stresses or damage left from the grinding operations.

Ductile or Partial Ductile Mode Machining of Brittle Materials

This paper reports ductile or partial ductile mode machining of silicon, glass and some advanced ceramics. Results are presented using scanning electron micrographs of the machined surfaces. Grinding and lapping operations using inexpensive machine tools could produce ductile streaks on surfaces of these brittle materials under good conditions. Manufacture of spherical glass lenses by the fract...

Experimental Investigation of Subsurface Damages Made by Cup Grinding and Lapping Process of Optical Glass BK7 in Ductile Mode

Conventional material removal of BK7 optical glass will normally result in brittle fracture at the surface, generating severe subsurface damage and poor surface finish. Subsurface damages induced by grinding strongly influence the mechanical strength and optical quality of optical glasses. However, through ductile mode grinding it is possible to reduce the surface and subsurface cracks. It is m...

Surface finish of precision machined advanced materials

This paper studies the surface finish and integrity of glass, silicon, some advanced ceramics and aluminum-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with ceramic particles, precision machined by various machining processes. The studies revealed that grinding/lapping operations using inexpensive machine tools can produce ductile streaks on glass and silicon surfaces under good grinding/lap...

Development of a Lapping Film Utilizing Agglomerative Fine Abrasives for Finishing of Optical Glass

In the finishing process of optical glass, polishing with ceria, silica or zirconia slurry is conventionally adopted. The machining process, however, has problems involving inefficiency and a detrimental impact on the environment. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the process be replaced with fixed-abrasive machining, but conventional fixed-abrasive tools have problems relating to low ...
